Notwithstanding the Hawaii miss, the game was still tied, and BYU needed points to pull off the win.
Early in the game, it appeared that BYU would run away with this game. Running back Kalin Hall gave the Cougars an early 14-0 lead with two first quarter touchdown runs. Hawaii, however, came back by reeling off three touchdown runs of its own to take a 21-14 lead in the second quarter.
The game would continue to swing from one side to the other with each team scoring in waves.
BYU responded to Hawaii's run with 17 straight points to close out the half. John Walsh threw a three-yard touchdown to tight end Terence Saluone, followed by a Joe Herrick 27-yard field goal with 1:27 to play before halftime. BYU was able to score one final touchdown before the half thanks to a Hawaii turnover.
Two plays into the ensuing drive, BYU's Frank Christianson recovered a Hawaii fumble. The Cougars were just 35 yards away from a touchdown. Walsh completed back to back passes. The first was to Tyler Anderson, and the second was a 24-yard TD to Eric Drage.
Trailing by a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, BYU faced a 4th and 10 from the Hawaii 34-yard line. Walsh had thrown three incomplete passes the previous three plays. He dropped back on fourth down to attempt another pass, and connected with Anderson for not just the 10 yards needed for a first down, but all 34 needed for the touchdown.
With the game knotted up at 38, that is when Hawaii drove into field goal range. Following the miss, BYU was way out of scoring range. That all changed when Drage took a Walsh pass 58-yards to the Hawaii 22. At that point, Herrick came on and kicked a game winning 40-yard field goal.
Christianson intercepted a Hawaii pass to seal the win.
Final Score: BYU 41, Hawaii 38.
The BYU defense struggled to stop the Hawaii run attack (454 yards), but the Cougars forced four turnovers to keep the game from getting out of control.
The 58-yard catch to set up the field goal gave Drage an even 100 yards receiving for the game. Walsh was just 19 of 36 for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns with 0 interceptions, but made the big throws when it mattered most.
