The Cougar offense, led by quarterback Gary Sheide, turned the interceptions into touchdowns. Sheide’s touchdown pass to tailback Jeff Blanc gave the Cougars an insurmountable 21-7 first quarter lead.
As the game went on, BYU continued to intercept the Wildcat quarterback (5 total interceptions), and Sheide continued to throw touchdown passes. Sheide threw 5 touchdown passes in the win. He was 20 of 35 for 267 yards on the day. His pass efficiency rating was 168.4.
Sheide’s favorite target was John Betham. Betham caught half of Sheide’s 20 completions for over half of his total passing yards (10 receptions, 144 yards). Three of Sheide’s five touchdown passes went to Betham.
After starting the season 0-3-1, this win pulled BYU to 0.500 on the season at 3-3-1. All three wins were by 24 points or more.
