What were the game changing play's then?
Play 1: Daniel Sorensen's blocked field goal, 2nd Quarter 9:07
Moments earlier, BYU had taken a 17-7 lead. Utah State took the ball off the ensuing kickoff and drove down to the BYU 30-yard line. Utah State's back up quarterback was leading the drive. However, the drive stalled, and the Aggies elected to attempt a field goal. A successful kick would have made the game a single-digit, one score game, which is a necessity when your inexperienced back up is at the controls.
When BYU blocked the kick, it signaled that points would be very hard to come by, and any hopes of making a comeback with Craig Harrison at quarterback were very slim. Utah State had just 29 yard of offense the rest of the first half, and gained just one first down.
Hill's second TD pass to Mathews gave BYU a commanding 24-7 lead. BYU had come out in the second half and drove 75 yards for the score. It reinforced that the control the Cougars had in the first half would continue into for the rest of the game.
Before Utah State had a chance to have the ball on offense and implement any halftime adjustments, BYU had made it a three score game. There was no way Van Noy and Co. on the Cougar defense was going to let a backup quarterback bring the Aggies back from 17 points down.
