Middle Tennessee State held a 10-7 lead, but BYU was driving for a go ahead score. The Blue Raider defense, however, stripped the ball from BYU quarterback Taysom Hill just two yards away from the end zone to end that scoring threat.
A muffed punt by BYU helped Middle Tennessee State take the lead just minutes earlier. With the lead and forcing two quick turnovers, MTSU had a lot of momentum. Van Noy's aggressive play took that momentum away.
Van Noy's safety was almost the only game changing play in this contest. BYU took the free kick following the safety and, again drove inside the Blue Raider five-yard line. A second fumble ended that scoring threat, and took the momentum away from the Cougars.
That second fumble was very frustrating. It could have caused BYU to crumble thinking fate was out to get them. BYU showed it had the character to rise above. The defense made another stop. When the offense got the ball back, Hill took matters into his own hands. He scored from 50-yards out to give BYU a 16-10 lead that would not be relinquished.
From that point on, BYU was in complete control of the game.
