Did you know that in 1988 the Texas Longhorns were the least competitive team that BYU played from the Lone Star state?
The next week, freshman Ty Detmer had to come off the bench as the Cougars trailed UTEP 27-17 in the fourth quarter. He rallied BYU to a 31-27 win. UTEP lost just one other game in the regular season, and finished the year 10-3.
In mid-October, BYU dispatched TCU 31-18 after building a 28-3 lead. Like the Longhorns, TCU finished the year 4-7.
Clearly, Texas suffered the worst defeat of the three. Using how they fared against BYU as the measuring stick, then the Longhorns would be the worst team from Texas that BYU played in 1988.
