The Brigham Young Cougars will wear throwback, royal blue uniforms when they take on the Utah Utes tomorrow. The last time that happened was 2009 when BYU wore the old royal blues to honor the 1984 National Championship team. In that game, strong safety Andrew Rich had a 52-yard interception return, and return specialist O'Neill Chambers had a 43-yard punt return.
Did you know that Rich's 52-yard interception return is the longest by any BYU player against Utah since 2004, and that Chamber's 43-yard punt return is the longest since at least 1981?
According to Cougarstats.com, no BYU player prior to 1982 had a 43-yard punt return, or longer, against Utah. It is inconclusive if any player had a longer punt return in 1981 or earlier. The CougarStats archives for player stats only go back to 1978. In the 1981 BYU-Utah game, Vai Sikahema had 5 punt returns for 61 yards, but it is unknown whether one of those returns was 43 yards or longer.
Either way, what O'Neill Chambers did in 2009 is very impressive, not to mention the huge momentum swing it had in the game.
Hopefully the royal blue unis will bring out the big plays again for BYU, and a Cougar victory.
